Can Fast Food Make you Fat

Obesity rates have been on the increase over the past couple of decades and Western governments are starting to worry about the implications for their economies and health services. There has obviously been a shift in the way people live their lives which has increasingly seen them reach for quick-and-easy foods, as well as becoming lazier with people burning fewer calories than they would have done in the past. At the same time, there is a lot of pressure on people to succeed in all areas of their lives, from their relationships to their education and career. It is a stressful world where people have less time to chill out and enjoy spending time with their families. Fast food has become a way for people to save time, but unfortunately eating too much fast food may be doing them more harm than good.

Fast food tends to be associated with establishments such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and KFC, although there are now a wide range of fast-food companies for people to choose from. The main attraction of fast food is that it is prepared and served extremely quickly. There is no waiting around – you just go up to the counter and within minutes you are walking away with a meal. However, the meals on offer are usually calorific and provide you with very little nutrition. Fast food restaurants want to make a profit and so they want to keep costs down, which means most of the ingredients used to make up your meal won’t be of the highest quality. You usually find that fast food meals are also highly calorific and exceed the recommended guidelines for your sugar, sodium and saturated fat intake.

If you eat lots of fast food, therefore, it is quite possible that you could end up overweight or obese. You might be lucky enough to have an extremely fast metabolism, or you may exercise a lot, which can obviously offset your high calorie intake, but most people can’t rely on their metabolism to help them maintain a healthy weight, and don’t get enough exercise to do so either. It is therefore not surprising that most people who eat copious amounts of fast food have a weight problem, but it is not inevitable that eating fast food will cause you get fat.

It comes down to how often you choose to eat fast food and the meal choices you make. You can eat a burger once every couple of weeks, and it won’t cause you a problem, whilst if you choose to eat a regular sized meal rather than opting for the larger size you will be saving yourself a considerable amount of calories. Some fast food restaurants even offer healthier alternatives, such as salads, but you have to be wary, as sometimes they seem like the healthier option, but in actual fact turn out to be worse for you.

Fast food can make you fat if you eat enough of it, but it tends to be people’s general lifestyle habits which cause their weight gain, since it is eating too much food in general and not being physically active enough which can cause you to put on a few pounds.
